Lumia640 first Impressions

The version we have here is the UK retail release, so it's the single SIM, LTE variant. The Microsoft Store is the first place to buy from, but other carrier and third-party stores will be offering it too at some point.

The first thought is that this is indeed a successor to the Lumia 630/635. The body has a similar look and feel to it, albeit bigger, but it's an iteration on the previous model's design.

For a mid-range offering, though, the Lumia 640 is instantly impressive. The 720p display is sharp and colorful. The camera, while we've yet to really test it out, seems pretty good. 8MP is a step up in resolution from the 635 and it comes with an LED flash this time around.

Other things we like, then. The bump to 1GB of RAM, as is now seemingly standard for Microsoft, is welcomed. As is the addition of the front-facing camera, something else its predecessor didn't have. And for a 5-inch device without a Full HD display, that 2500mAh battery is sounding pretty tasty. It's 300mAh more than the Lumia 830 which has also has a 5-inch display at 720p, and we've never had any complaints with battery life on that.

We've a really good early feeling about the Lumia 640. It fixes some of the things we didn't like about the Lumia 635 and brings some great new features to the table like Lumia Camera 5 on a non-pureview device. We've not had long with it, but it has the potential to be a real star in Microsoft's device lineup.

And however small it may be in the grand scheme of things, the black buttons with the orange we've got here looks fantastic.

Mi 5 to Launch With MIUI 7 which is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop

Xiaomi, the company often referred to as China's Apple, has teamed up with the Android Open Kang Project (popularly known as AOKP) for its MIUI 7 custom user interface based on Android 5.1 Lollipop.

The news was confirmed via AOKP's official blog that revealed both Xiaomi and Team Kang were working closely on MIUI 7, which will debut on the next flagship smartphone, the Mi 5. For the uninitiated, AOKP develops custom Android ROMs for smartphones and tablets, much like what Cyanogen does with CyanogenMod.

The blog said, "With all the pieces of the deal in place, I wish to announce that all Team Kang members are working with Xiaomi on a new and refreshed MIUI 7, which will be finally based on Android 5.1, and be coming on the Mi 5."

The company revealed that MIUI 7 is internally codenamed MiKangy, which will see a new take on the Android UI. It added that the new UI will include popular features from top ROMs such as CyanogenMod, ParanoidAndroid, Omni, and AOKP to "create an experience which completely submerges the user in his own world."

The ROM maker stresses that the upcoming UI of the Mi 5 will evolve with the user and after few months of usage, the UI of each Mi 5 handset will have personalised features.

According to the company, MarcLandis will lead the technical development of MIUI 7 aka MiKangy, while Zaphod will oversee the product development.

The ROM maker also claimed that the tie-up with Xiaomi won't affect the future of AOKP, discarding any acquisition rumours - if any.

Xiaomi earlier this week announced a price cut for the Mi 4, which ties-in well with the company's plans for the Mi 5 release expected this year.

The Xiaomi Mi 4 will retail at CNY 1,799 (approximately Rs. 18,000) for the 16GB variant down from the previous price tag of CNY 1,999 (approximately Rs. 20,000). While a 'lite' variant of the Xiaomi Mi 4 with 2GB of RAM instead of 3GB, will retail at CNY 1,699 (approximately Rs. 17,000) - a CNY 100 price cut from the earlier price of CNY 1,799. Notably, both the Mi 4 variants would be available at reduced priced starting April 8.

Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL are coming to India on April 7

Microsoft is hosting concurrent media events in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, where it will introduce the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL in the Indian market. Both devices will be offered in dual SIM editions, with no word yet on whether we'll also see the LTE variant being introduced in India.

As for the hardware, the Lumia 640 features a 5-inch 720p ClearBlack display, 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 CPU, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal memory, microSD slot, 8MP camera at the back, 1MP front shooter, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 2,500mAh battery.

The larger Lumia 640 XL comes with a 5.7-inch 720p display, similar internal hardware as the Lumia 640 with a 13MP camera at the back and a 5MP camera at the front of the device, with a larger 3,000mAh battery. Both devices feature the latest software in the form of Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2.

Microsoft has launched MS-DOS Mobile for Lumia smartphones ..... Says wpcentral

A new OS designed especially for Lumia smartphones. In case you didn't know, MS-DOS was installed on millions of desktops. Well, now you can install it on your phone. "Black and white text has never looked so good," says Tom Messett from Microsoft Lumia Marketing in the launch video. Watch the video to see glimpses of the new/old OS before deciding if you should install it on your phone

The 'internet.exe' command in the same folder opens up Internet Explorer. You'll briefly hear connecting sound before launching the app. There are several other programs that you can check out:

Contacts - Opens the contacts list.
Email [address] - After user types a message and presses the done button in the application bar, the platform's email composer is launched
Maps [search terms] - Launches the map app with search terms
Market - Launches Windows Phone Store
Phone [number] - Launches phone app with given number
Review - Launches review page for this app
Cortana [search terms] - Launches Cortana with the search terms
SMS [number] - Launches SMS composer with the number
Before you start complaining how ridiculous this sounds, go check today's date. It's April Fools Day! Isn't this kind of funny? WhatsApp finally adds voice calls option for all Android users, iOS coming soon , no words about windows phones

Android users can finally make voice calls on WhatsApp, thanks to a quiet but major update. The feature has been teased for months, with the update hitting select users a few weeks ago. Now, however, it seems it's available to all, with the latest version of WhatsApp offering a new, cleaner layout, with three tabs for Calls, Chats, and Contacts. As you'd expect, you simply click the Calls tab and select a contact to chart talking

Although the update has yet to be confirmed from the company itself, the update is available either from the Google Play Store or WhatsApp's own site. Be patient, however, it seem the roll-out is a bit patchy — not everyone is finding the update available for them
